Sorry Demi, I think it’s Photoshop
When Demi Moore appeared on this cover of W magazine, readers were quick to point out evidence of Photoshop.
The most glaring oddity of the image is the clumsy way her left hip was whittled, making her look deformed between hip and thigh. And of course her skin is all pearlized and dramatically highlighted and shadowed.
Demi looks amazingly long and skinny in this image. We tend to accept photographs at face value but having seen Demi in her bikini, people started questioning whether this was Demi’s body.
Have a look at the images below.
The same dress was worn on the catwalk by model Anja Rubik. Anja is 5 inches taller than 5′5″ Demi. Interesting how the dress has the exact same number of strips of fabric in the bodice on both women. I guess they use wider strips for the model’s dresses compared to Demi’s? I don’t think so.
Then we have the image of Demi on the magazine cover superimposed on the image of Anja. The angle of the shoulder is different between the two images so the arms look like they are different lengths. It looks to me like the bodies in the two images belong to the same person, caught in slightly different poses.
The boobs look bigger in Demi’s picture but we’ve seen how easy it is to increase the bust size with Photoshop.
The shape of the waist and hips is almost identical between the two images. And you can see how the line of the left hip and thigh should go on Anja’s image.

Demi's magazine cover image and Anja's runway image superimposed
And if you still have any doubts about whether Demi was photoshopped or not, have a look at Demi in a bikini, photographed this past summer. She’s in great shape, and very slim but she does not have the long narrow waist and thin arms that Anja has.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher on the beach, July 09
It’s hard enough for us to compare ourselves with a 47 year old who has the time, money and resources to keep herself looking youthful and in great shape. As fit and beautiful as Demi Moore is, that’s not enough for the fashion industry. Her body is replaced by a 20-something year old model’s!
Don’t get hung up on the images you see in the media. Don’t hold yourself up to some ideal that even the subject of the photo cannot possibly attain in reality. Be proud of your own unique appearance and qualities.

Holy Photoshop, Batman!
I was writing an article about Drew Barrymore’s lips for our newsletter and came across these 2 photos, taken within a few months of each other.

On the left, we have the image of Drew that was used for her cover on In Style magazine last month. The image on the right was published in British tabloid, The Daily Mail, on September 30th 2009, following the London premiere of Drew’s directorial debut in Whip It.
You can see how plastic and flawless she looks in the In Style photo. What really jumps out at me is how tiny her body looks, especially her arm. Drew is slim but not quite that slim.
In the candid photo on the right, she looks slim and beautiful. You can see that she has more meat on her arm than in the photoshopped picture. Her skin looks smooth and radiant but not plastic.
It makes me mad and sad that In Style magazine would alter her image to such a degree when Drew is already slim and beautiful. The message they are sending out is that even if you are taking care of yourself, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping your face fresh and youthful, that’s not good enough.
We all need to be aware of how much the images around us are altered. We are influenced by these images and can’t help but judge ourselves against them. Don’t judge yourself harshly; remember that even Drew Barrymore doesn’t look like her picture in a magazine.

The difference between reality and the images around us
Most of us want to look our best. That’s natural.
How do we know what our best should be? We are surrounded by all kinds of images in the media that show women of all ages looking like perfect 20-year-olds. Almost every image that we see has been photoshopped to remove imperfections, making the subject look a little taller, a little slimmer with smooth blemish-free, wrinkle-free skin.
Seeing is believing, right? We see these images and accept them at face value, little realizing how much retouching was done to achieve such perfection.
Take a look at the video below, which explains how much photoshopping is done with lots of examples.
I can do a lot to make your skin smoother and tighter, restore youthful volume to your face and lips, remove brown and red blemishes and relax wrinkles but I’m not going to make you look like a photoshopped doll.

Christine, a grandmother who looks 10 years younger
Christine is a lovely and vivacious 61 year old.
At first glance, she looks too young to warrant a 10 Years Younger program.
Take another look though: Christine’s heavy eyelids, crepey skin on her cheeks and fullness at the jawline and neck are adding years to an otherwise youthful face.
Although Christine’s skin looks very fair, she has a lot of sun damage and some redness.
I knew that the 10 Years Younger Program would create subtle changes that would add up to real transformation for Christine.
We did all of Christine’s treatments, apart from the Accent facial, on the same day.
First we did a photofacial to target her sun damage and redness. Then we did a Pixel laser treatment to erase fine lines and crepiness, and make her skin smoother and brighter.
Doesn’t she look luminous in her after picture (right)?
The Accent facial was targeted to contour her lower cheeks and the fullness under her chin. Her neck is tighter and less full in her after picture.
Christine also had a SoftLift, courtesy of Allergan. Christine received a total of 72 units of Botox to smooth her frown lines, lift her brows, open her eyes, and decrease vertical lines around her mouth.
Christine needed small amounts of Juvederm in many areas. Juvederm along her brow bones gave her a brow lift and restored definition to her brows. Juvederm smoothed the creases under the eyes. Each cheek received a little over 2 syringes; this helped to lift her cheeks and make her face more tapered at the jawline.
In the mouth area, Juvederm softened the lines from nose to mouth and the corners of the mouth downwards (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). Her lips were subtly plumped up and the two ridges that run from the cupid’s bow up to the nose (the filtrum) were built up to make the lips a little more shapely.
I also placed Juvederm in the indentations in front of her jowls — in medical terms, the pre-jowl sulcus — to make the line of her jaw smooth and minimize the appearance of the jowls.
All together, Christine received 11 syringes of Juvederm.
Christine’s first grandchild was born days before Christine’s treatments. Christine got a kick out of being a new grandmother and looking 10 years younger at the same time.

KathyP’s transformation: Moving beyond cancer
At age 49, one of the most striking signs of aging the Kathy had (before picture, left) was a lot of fine and heavy lines.
You can see the crepiness and pleating of her skin on her cheek, and the number of lines radiating out from her lips.
Kathy’s skin is showing advanced loss of collagen and elastin, typical of excessive sun exposure in someone with fair skin. Sun damage accumulates so even if you haven’t tanned much since your teens or 20s, the results of sunburns and tanning will show in your face in your late 30s, your 40s and 50s.
When I first met Kathy, I watched her mouth closely as she talked and could see that she had a tendency to making pursing motions of her lips. The muscle bands around her lips pleat the skin, creating the lines that radiate from her mouth. The combination of muscle action and sun damage is what made the lines so deep.
So for Kathy’s makeover, it was critical that we address the sun damage and textural changes in her skin.
Looking at Kathy’s after photo, right, I can safely say that we met our mandate.
An IPL photofacial reduced the brown sun spots and redness in her complexion. A Pixel laser treatment stimulated her skin to make new collagen and new skin cells, smoothing, tightening and brightening her skin. The results of the Pixel first appear about a week after the treatment and continue to improve for weeks afterwards. On Kathy, you can see the reduction in the lines of her cheek resulting from the Pixel.
The Accent radiofrequency facial also stimulates collagen formation in the skin and sub-skin tissues, leading to improved contour and skin tightening. I spent a lot of time on Kathy’s neck and around her mouth, tightening the skin. It can take a couple of months to see the full effects of an Accent facial.
Kathy also received a SoftLift, a combination of Botox and Juvederm.
I used Botox in Kathy’s forehead, in the frown lines between her brows, above her brows to create a brow lift, around the outer corners of her eyes to smooth crowsfeet, and around her mouth to reduce the pursing action that was creating lines.
I put a little Juvederm in Kathy’s cheeks to lift the cheeks and restore a natural youthful curve to them. I also put Juvederm into the marionette lines which extend downwards from the corners of her mouth.
Kathy’s lips needed 2 syringes of Juvederm to restore lost volume. Normally, I might do this as a 2-step procedure so she would have time to get used the additional volume after 1 syringe before adding a second one but, for the purposes of the makeover, we had to do both syringes in one go.
The combination of restoring volume to the lips with Juvederm and using a little Botox around the mouth, especially with some Pixel laser to build up collagen, is ideal for addressing deep lines around the mouth.
I want to emphasize here that I didn’t put filler into the lines themselves; I didn’t need to.
The other benefit for Kathy of having her lips filled is that she doesn’t have gum showing above her teeth when she smiles any more.
Kathy received a total of 9 syringes of Juvederm and 75 units of Botox.
All of Kathy’s treatments were done in one day, except the Accent facial which was done on the day of the photoshoot. When you have the 10 Years Younger package, you can choose whether you have everything in one day or split up over 2 or more days. Our 10 Years Younger ladies all felt that it was no problem to go through the treatment and recovery of all of the treatments at the same time. And they were very excited to see such a profound rejuvenation after only 1 week of healing.
Kathy told me that she felt that the 10 Years Younger program had helped her to turn the page on the illness and suffering that she had experienced in the last few years. Now she is ready to go forward.

How Kathy M. came to look as young as she feels
Kathy M. had a problem: as a fit and healthy woman, she felt much younger than her 50 years but when she looked in the mirror, her face reflected her true age.
When I look at her before photo (left), I see a face that has lost a lot of volume and suffered from sun damage.
Kathy had very heavy eyelids and lots of lines around her eyes. Her mouth was small to start with and shrinking away to nothing. Her cheeks had also lost volume, resulting in deep lines around her mouth. Her complexion appeared dark and dull.
Kathy needed work on both the colour and texture of her skin, as well as volume restoration and smoothing of lines and wrinkles.
What a difference in her after picture (right)!
Kathy underwent an IPL photofacial to reduce sun damage. A Pixel laser treatment helped tighten and brighten her skin; we made certain to target the lines around her eyes, mouth and forehead with extra shots. An Accent facial produced further tightening of her face and neck. Look how much brighter and smoother her complexion is after these treatments.
Kathy received a SoftLift with Juvederm and Botox.
I injected Juvederm in Kathy’s cheeks to restore the apples. This also helped to smooth the skin under the eyes, in conjunction with Botox. She also needed Juvederm for the lines around her mouth and for her lips. I put one syringe in her lips before the photoshoot but we both agreed that she needed a second syringe afterwards. If you saw her at the ’80s FlashBack Dance, she looked pretty and natural with 2 syringes of Juvederm in her lips.
The combination of Botox with the skin tightening treatments made a world of difference for Kathy’s eyes. You can see that her eyelids look more contoured and her eyes look fresher.
In total, Kathy received 10 syringes of Juvederm and 60 units of Botox.
Kathy is thrilled with the external results and feels that her internal transformation through this process has been profound.
I found it extremely gratifying to help Kathy match her face to her youthful body and spirit.

Celeste’s 10 Years Younger Transformation
Remember Celeste?
In her before photo (left), I see a woman who is firmly into middle age.
Her cheeks are sagging, creating the sharp folds between the nose and mouth (nasolabial or NL folds) and bulging at the jawline with jowls. Her lips are thinning with down-turned corners. She has engrained lines across her forehead and distinct crowsfeet. The hollowing under her eyes has created a sharp line that starts at the inner corner and curves around the hollow area, called a tear trough.
At age 47, Celeste felt discouraged and on the cusp of giving up. She avoided being in family photographs and hid behind black oversized clothing.
Take a look at this gorgeous woman! In her After photo (right), she’s not wearing black and she doesn’t look like she’s afraid of the camera.
Celeste was photographed after only having the SoftLift with Botox and Juvederm. She went on to have the physical treatments (Pixel laser, photofacial and Accent RF facial) after the photoshoot.
I used botox mostly for the upper half of the face, to soften frown lines, crowsfeet and forehead lines and to lift her brows. Celeste needed a little botox around her mouth to soften some smoker’s lines (sorry Celeste, the cat’s out of the bag). She had 74 units in total.
For the Juvederm component of her SoftLift, I concentrated on restoring volume to her cheeks. Putting the Juvederm in the cheeks restores the youthful roundness she used to have. It also lifts the sagging tissues below so she needed very little Juvederm in the NL folds and corners of the mouth. Restoring the cheeks also improves the under-eye area.
I want to emphasize that I did not have to use any Juvederm along her jawline and only a tiny amount in the left tear trough. And yet you can see how much her tear troughs and jowls are improved — this is what happens when you fix the cheeks.
As gratifying as it was for me to restore Celeste’s cheeks, doing her lips was even better. Her beautiful daughter Amber was with us during the injections, holding Celeste’s hand. As I started injecting some Juvederm into Celeste’s lips, I could see them taking on a contour very similar to her daughter’s so I carried on, using Amber’s mouth as my guide. I ended using 2 syringes just for the lips. Don’t they look pretty and natural?
I used a total of 8 syringes of Juvederm on Celeste.
Her injections were on the 7th of May and the photoshoot was on the 15th so you can see that it didn’t take long for any swelling to settle down.
We were with Celeste when some women friends saw her for the first time after the treatments. They all thought that she looked great but couldn’t pinpoint what was different about her. To me, that is the greatest possible compliment.

Marg After AND Before
Here is Marg in her amazing after photo.

Doesn’t she look great?
We think we hit the mandate and then some. She looks at least 10 years years younger!
When we did the photo shoot for the before pictures of our “Fabulous Five”, we asked them to come to the shoot looking nice, dressed up, without going out for hair or anything fancy like you might for a really big do.
In short, we asked all of them to come looking as good as they could.
Here is Marg’s before picture from the shoot.

When we saw the result of the before shoot we were admittedly a little worried. Marg didn’t look that bad. And Marg is a lovely person whom we were getting to know. Knowing someone really colours how you see them. She has a lovely voice and a very sweet nature.
Would we be able to make a real difference?
A couple of weeks after the makeover Marg said something that I thought was pretty special.
She told me that with all the bad things that had happened in her life over the past few years, culminating in her sister’s sudden, unexpected and unlikely death, she had felt pretty defeated by everything.
Restoring youthfulness to her appearance allowed Marg to get back in touch with that part of her that was outgoing, energetic and hopeful. We all commented on her strength and humour throughout the process.
“This is the real me,” Marg said. We are happy to welcome her back.

The treatments that made Margaret look 10 years younger
In an earlier post, I discussed the concerns that I had with Margaret’s face. In summary, she had roughness and discoloration of the skin from sun and environmental damage; she had decrease and descent of the volume in her face making her look too full at the jawline; she had lots of lines around her eyes and loss of volume in her lips and the tissues around her mouth.
Margaret underwent our 10 Years Younger in a Day program.
That’s right — all of the treatments were done in one day, except the Accent facial, which was done on the day of the photoshoot.
We started with the physical treatments: a photofacial to reduce redness and brown spots and a Pixel laser treatment to make Margaret’s skin smoother, more dewy and tighter. You can see how much brighter and more even her complexion looks in the After picture, below.
We also did chemical peels to Margaret’s decolletage and hands. After all, we wouldn’t want these areas to give away her age.
Then Margaret had a complete SoftLift, courtesy of Allergan, Inc. The SoftLift treatment is a non-surgical facelift, using Botox and Juvederm injections.
I used Botox to relax the muscles around the eyes, forehead and mouth that were causing permanent lines to be etched into her skin. The medical term for these lines is dynamic wrinkles, meaning that the repetitive muscle action is creating the line. The repeated folding of the skin gradually damages the skin, just as repeatedly folding a piece of paper creates a permanent crease. I noticed that Margaret had a droop of her left eyebrow and eyelid so I used a little more Botox on that brow to elevate it. You can see in the After picture below that the 2 brows are level with each other and elevated compared with her Before picture.
I used Juvederm to restore volume to Margaret’s face. I always start with the cheeks because restoring the cheeks lifts everything below like the lines bracketing the mouth, and jowls. The lines bracketing the mouth — in medical terms, the nasolabial folds and marionette lines — are classified as static wrinkles because they are formed by the sagging of overlying skin, rather than by muscle contraction.
Margaret had good volume in her face so it was just a matter of lifting it back up into her cheeks. I noticed that her left cheek was flatter than the right so I ended up using about twice as much Juvederm on the left side to balance things out. If you look at the After picture, you can see how the rounding of the cheeks in the midface has made Margaret look younger, giving her a nice contour under her cheek bones and making her face narrower at the jawline.
I mentioned earlier that Margaret had a lot of regression of the tissues below her mouth. I put Juvederm in the tissues under the corners of the mouth (marionette lines) and under the lower lip. In these pictures, you can see that the marionette lines are improved but you’d have to see Margaret in real life to appreciate the difference that the volume made in this area.
I ended up using 2 syringes of Juvederm in Margaret’s lips. If you look at her lips in the After picture, she still has vertical lines present in both lips so you can see that I did not overfill them. Having bigger lips really balances Margaret’s face. In her Before picture, her nose is her most dominant feature. In the After picture, her lips and cheeks are more in proportion with her nose.
I have to say that the Juvederm was a dream to work with. Remember, I was doing injections on a face that had already had an IPL and a laser treatment so Margaret was already sore. We put numbing cream on her skin and I didn’t have to do any extra injections of local anesthetic because the Juvederm comes premixed with the local anesthetic. This makes the treatment very comfortable.
Margaret recovered from these treatments within a few days. She dropped into the clinic 5 days after the treatments and looked wonderful, even without makeup.
The 10 Years Younger in a Day program is ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to take time off to heal from separate procedures. You can have everything done before a long weekend and look great when it is time to go back to work.
